It’s difficult for modern Americans to even imagine what it was like to attend an evening meal in the Ancient Near East. Who was allowed to be there, even as a guest, was very strictly segregated by social norms. For Simon to invite Jesus would be seen as an honor. The kind of people Jesus attracts, however, would not always be the ones you would bring home to mother.
